Refer a patient to vision therapy

We collaborate with a range of healthcare providers who recognize the impact of the visual system on overall function and recovery. This includes pediatricians, neurologists, physical and vestibular therapists, psychologists, and other specialists managing patients with complex or unresolved symptoms. Our goal is to complement your care by identifying and treating visual system dysfunctions that may be contributing to your patient’s clinical presentation.

Our goal is to complement your care by identifying and treating visual system dysfunctions that may be contributing to your patient’s clinical presentation.

For Pediatricians

We work with children whose symptoms don’t fully resolve through traditional pathways—patients with reading struggles, attention concerns, headaches, or suspected ADHD where the underlying issue may be visual. Dr. Chelette specializes in brain-based visual rehabilitation, identifying and treating functional vision problems that interfere with learning and development. Through collaborative care, we help pediatric patients improve reading efficiency, reduce symptoms, and better engage in school and daily life.

For Neurologists

We partner with neurologists to support patients with persistent visual symptoms following concussion or neurological injury. Many individuals continue to experience headaches, dizziness, light sensitivity, and cognitive fatigue despite otherwise normal findings. Dr. Chelette focuses on neuro-optometric rehabilitation, addressing deficits in eye movement, visual processing, and visual-vestibular integration to help patients progress more fully in their recovery.

For Physical Therapists / Vestibular Therapists

We collaborate with PTs and vestibular specialists when patients plateau in rehabilitation due to unresolved visual system dysfunction. The visual system plays a critical role in balance, coordination, and spatial orientation. Dr. Chelette evaluates and treats eye tracking, focusing, and visual-vestibular integration issues that may be limiting progress, helping patients move forward more efficiently in their overall recovery.

For Psychologists, Counselors, and Therapists

We work with patients whose symptoms—such as anxiety, attention difficulties, or sensory overwhelm—may be exacerbated by underlying visual processing dysfunction. When the visual system is not functioning efficiently, it can increase cognitive load and reduce tolerance for reading, screens, and busy environments. Dr. Chelette provides neuro-optometric care that supports regulation of the visual-brain connection, often complementing therapeutic and behavioral interventions.

Many patients we see have symptoms that persist despite appropriate care in other areas. We commonly co-manage cases involving reading and learning difficulties, post-concussion symptoms, binocular vision dysfunction, chronic headaches, dizziness, and visual intolerance to screens or busy environments. By addressing the visual component, we often help unlock progress in patients who may otherwise feel stuck.

Consider referral when a patient’s symptoms are not fully explained or resolved, or when progress in treatment has plateaued. Common referral indicators include headaches with reading, difficulty concentrating, dizziness in visually stimulating environments, double vision, or ongoing symptoms after concussion. Patients with “normal” eye exams may still have functional vision deficits that require specialized evaluation.

When to refer a patient

Our care is centered on a brain-based model of vision, focusing on how the eyes and brain work together rather than eyesight alone. We assess eye movement, coordination, focusing, and visual processing, then design individualized treatment plans using vision therapy and, when appropriate, supportive lenses. This structured approach allows us to reduce symptoms, improve function, and support long-term outcomes.

Our approach to neuro-optometric care

Patients referred to our office undergo a comprehensive evaluation that goes beyond a standard eye exam, with a focus on functional and neurological aspects of vision. From there, we provide clear findings, a defined treatment plan, and consistent communication with your office when appropriate. Our goal is to ensure your patients feel understood, supported, and confident in their path forward.

Do you take insurance?

Why we don’t bill insurance

Our care model focuses on brain-based visual function, not just eyesight. This includes:
  • Eye teaming and coordination
  • Eye tracking and movement
  • Focusing flexibility
  • Visual processing and integration

Most insurance plans are designed around:
  • Basic eye exams
  • Glasses prescriptions
  • Disease detection

They often do not cover the type of in-depth evaluation and rehabilitation we provide. By working outside of insurance networks, we are able to:
  • Spend more time with each patient
  • Perform comprehensive functional testing
  • Provide individualized treatment programs

Texas Vision Therapy is a private-pay practice, which means we do not directly bill medical or vision insurance for services. However, many of our services may qualify for out-of-network reimbursement depending on your plan.

What we provide:
  • A detailed superbill after your visit
  • Diagnostic and procedure codes required for submission
  • Support documentation when needed

What you do:
  • Submit the superbill to your insurance
  • Receive reimbursement directly from your plan (if eligible)

Many families use PPO plans, HSA, or FSA accounts to offset the cost of care.

Your first step is a comprehensive functional vision evaluation, designed to assess how your eyes and brain work together. What this includes:
  • Detailed case history
  • Eye teaming (binocular vision) testing
  • Eye tracking and movement analysis
  • Focusing system evaluation
  • Visual processing screening
  • Doctor consultation and explanation of findings

Time: Approximately 2 hours total
Fee: $250

This is not a routine eye exam—it is a functional and neurological assessment of the visual system.

“Is this worth it if insurance doesn’t cover it?”
For many patients, this is the first time someone has identified the root cause of their symptoms. The goal is not temporary relief—it’s long-term functional improvement.

“Can we take breaks if needed?”
Yes. Therapy can be paused and resumed as needed. Progress is not generally lost, as skills build over time, but it is always worth discussing this with Dr Chelette based on your specific case.

“What if we’re not ready to start right away?”
That’s completely fine. Many families take time to process the information before beginning care.. We’re here when you’re ready.

Frequently asked questions at Texas Vision Therapy

What to expect during your brain-based vision evaluation with Dr. Chelette?

Your first visit is designed to answer a different question than a routine eye exam: Why are these symptoms happening if your eyes “seem fine”?

Most patients we see have been told their vision is 20/20 and that everything looks "normal," although they are still dealing with headaches or eye strain, reading difficulties or slow comprehension, dizziness or motion sensitivity, trouble focusing or attention challenges, or symptoms after a concussion.

This is because many vision problems are neurological and functional, not optical.

Evaluation (Beyond 20/20 Vision)

Your evaluation includes approximately 120 minutes of direct doctor time, focused on identifying problems within the visual system that affect daily performance.

We assess:

  • Eye teaming (binocular vision dysfunction) – How well your eyes work together as a coordinated system
  • Eye tracking (reading & learning performance) – How efficiently your eyes move across a page or screen
  • Eye focusing (visual endurance & clarity) – Your ability to sustain clear vision over time
  • Visual processing & eye-brain coordination – How your brain interprets and responds to visual information
  • Refraction and functional lens testing – Whether glasses may reduce strain or improve comfort
  • Basic eye health screening – To rule out medical eye conditions

Our goal is to reduce frustration and misdiagnosis. We want you to feel informed, supported, and confident in understanding both the problem and the options available to address it.

During the evaluation, we will:

  • Pinpoint the root cause of symptoms
  • Explain what we found in clear, understandable terms
  • Connect your symptoms to how your visual system is functioning
  • Determine if a targeted treatment plan is needed
